Is Wearing Glasses Compulsory in Keratoconus?

There are various treatments to improve vision in keratoconus disease. New methods developed with new technology are significantly effective in improving the quality of vision of patients. But do we have to wear glasses even if our vision quality improves? Is it compulsory to wear glasses in keratoconus? Let’s evaluate the issue in depth with the latest scientific researches.

Can We Say Goodbye to Glasses with Keratoconus Treatment?

In the study, 13 patients with moderate keratoconus were followed. In the first stage, crosslink application was performed to stop the progression of the disease.

After 4 weeks of this procedure, corneal ring treatment was applied to correct the surface of the cornea. Let us underline that there is a 4-week waiting period between the two treatments.

After the 2-stage treatment was completed, the patients were taken into observation. After making sure that the progression of the disease had stopped (about 6 months later), an operation was performed to implant a lens into the eye.

It is necessary to say that a 3-stage path was followed in total in the research. To summarise;

  • In the first stage, the cornea was strengthened and the progression of the disease was stopped.
  • In the second stage, the surface of the cornea was made more symmetrical. For this, corneal ring treatment was applied.
  • In the third stage, intraocular lens application was preferred to increase the patient’s vision.

Keratokonus’ta Gözlük Takmak Zorunlu mu?

In this way, the patients were able to get rid of astigmatism and myopia. Patients were observed for a period of 2 years after the treatment. According to the results of the research, it was concluded that the quality of vision of the patients progressed stably during this 2-year period.

If we evaluate the results of the research, we see that it is possible to get rid of glasses in keratoconus, although of course it varies according to the condition of the disease. But for this, there is a gradual treatment flow. The condition of the eye and how advanced the disease is are also very important.
