Prevalence of Demodex Mites and Effects of Dry Eye Disease

Demodex mites are known as parasites that can be seen in various parts of the body and are commonly found on the face. In terms of eye health, we know that demodex mites are called eyelash parasites and can block the meibomian glands in the eyelids. This situation directly causes the development of dry eye and results in the patient experiencing negative conditions such as burning, stinging and itching in the eye. If we proceed through the researches, we can better understand the relationship between demodex mites and dry eye.

Demodex Mite Frequency and Effects on Dry Eye

Research published by Journalsplos clearly reveals the relationship between dry eye and demodex mites. In the study, 253 participants were examined and samples taken from the face and eyelash bases were evaluated.

It was reported that 100% of the participants, agedbetween 18 and 80 years, were found to have demodex mites. It is clearly understood that the incidence of mites increases especially with increasing age.

In the evaluation, it was determined that the frequency of mites was higher in sebum-rich areas of the face.

The study revealed that the mites settle in the sebaceous glands in the eyelids, consume the oil layer there and as a result cause blockage of the oil ducts. It was also found that the number of mites and their effect on dry eye were higher, especially in older individuals.

Conclusion and Evaluation

The study on Demodex mites showed that all participants had more or less mites. There is an increase in mite density with age. Demodexes that settle at the base of the eyelashes also directly contribute to the development of dry eye.
