PRK Laser Surgery: A Solution for Vision Correction
PRK (PhotoRefractive Keratectomy) laser surgery is a refractive procedure used to treat vision problems like myopia, astigmatism, and hypermetropia. This method reshapes the cornea, the outermost layer of the eye, to correct refractive errors, helping patients regain clear vision and reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses.
Who is PRK Suitable For?
Before undergoing PRK surgery, patients must undergo a thorough evaluation to determine if they are suitable candidates. There are three key steps in the evaluation:
Vision Test: This test checks the level of refractive error and determines how much correction is needed.
Eye Health Evaluation: The second step is to ensure there are no other eye conditions that could interfere with the surgery.
Corneal Thickness Measurement: The thickness of the cornea is measured to ensure it’s suitable for the procedure.
PRK is particularly suitable for patients with thinner corneas or those at higher risk of eye trauma, as it doesn’t involve creating a flap in the cornea like LASIK, minimizing the risk of additional damage.
Post-PRK Recovery Process
After the procedure, patients will experience some discomfort and blurry vision. Here’s what to expect during recovery:
Bandage Contact Lens: A bandage contact lens may be placed over the eye to protect it.
Rest: Patients should rest and avoid eye strain for the first few days.
Pain and Sensitivity: Mild pain or burning may occur in the first 2-3 days, but this is temporary and will gradually subside.
PRK and Blurry Vision: How Long Does It Last?
It’s common for patients to experience blurry vision for the first 3-5 days post-surgery. The epithelium is regenerating, and vision will gradually improve over the weeks. Full clarity may take a few weeks to achieve.

Advantages of PRK Laser Surgery
Suitable for patients with thin corneas.
No corneal flap is created, preserving the structural integrity of the cornea.
Fewer risks of flap-related complications compared to LASIK.
Lower risk of dry eye syndrome compared to other methods.
Disadvantages of PRK Laser Surgery
A longer recovery time compared to LASIK.
Temporary discomfort, such as burning or light sensitivity, may occur.
A bandage contact lens may be needed during recovery.
Dry eye risk exists but is lower compared to LASIK.
Dry Eye Risk with PRK
Although PRK has a lower risk of dry eyes than LASIK, some degree of dry eye may still occur. Using solutions like LaserPrimeCare can help stabilize the eye’s surface, reducing complications and supporting better healing.
