Informational Videos About Laser Eye

Laser eye surgeries are typically performed to correct refractive errors in the eye and restore clear vision. However, laser treatment isn’t only used for correcting refractive errors. There are different laser treatments preferred for various vision complaints. One of these treatments is YAG laser therapy. Contrary to what is commonly believed, YAG laser treatment does not involve correcting the cornea or addressing refractive errors. So, what is this treatment used for, and when is it preferred?
What is YAG?
YAG (Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) laser is a precise type of laser used to remove unwanted tissues within the eye. While it can be used for several different problems, it is most commonly preferred for treating posterior capsule opacification, which can occur after cataract surgery.
Let’s explain this situation in more detail. First, let’s briefly describe what cataract surgery is and how it is performed. In cataract surgery, a clouding occurs in the eye’s natural lens.
This clouding progressively worsens over time and can lead to vision obstruction, emerging as a progressive disease. During the treatment phase, the clouded lens must be removed and replaced with a new artificial lens.
When the new lens is placed, the capsule (the membrane) that holds the lens in place is left in the eye. The reason for this is to provide a place for the artificial lens to be anchored. Not in every patient, but over time, this capsule can become cloudy and opaque inside the eye.
In such cases, YAG laser is used to eliminate the cloudiness in the capsule.
How is YAG Laser Applied? Does it Require Anesthesia?
This is a very simple procedure. It does not involve any surgery. The procedure can be performed in a clinic setting and is considered an outpatient treatment.
During this process, eye drops are used to dilate the pupil, and then anesthetic drops are applied to numb the eye. After numbing the eye, a special laser device is used to carry out the procedure.
During the laser application, patients typically only feel light and hear a sound. The procedure usually takes 5 to 10 minutes to complete.
Recovery Process After YAG Laser
After the laser procedure is completed, the patient needs to rest for a while. Due to the dilating drops used to enlarge the pupil, temporary issues such as blurriness in vision may occur for a certain period.
Vision problems are expected to subside within a few hours. During this time, relaxing eye drops may be given to the patient, and specific medications might be prescribed to prevent an increase in intraocular pressure.
Are There Any Complications After YAG Laser?
Since this is a simple, non-invasive procedure, the complications it may cause are limited. However, in rare cases, the following may occur:
Increase in intraocular pressure,
Burning and stinging sensations in the eye,
Glare and blurred vision.
Most of these side effects are temporary and short-lived. However, if the effects persist for an extended period, it is advisable to consult your doctor.
In general, a risk associated with laser treatments is dry eyes, which can be managed. The most effective solution would be to ensure the eye’s surface is in an ideal condition before the procedure. Solutions like Laser PrimeCare can help achieve this. If you’d like more information about Laser PrimeCare, you can visit the link provided here.
