LASIK is known as the preferred effective and safe treatment method for many common refractive errors. However, in some cases, LASIK is not applied or not preferred. Most of the time, we see that there is a question mark in this way for patients with a history of rheumatic diseases. In this content, we will try to answer the question of whether LASIK application can or cannot be performed for those with rheumatic diseases.
Can LASIK be performed on patients with rheumatic diseases?
In a scientific study published through the American Academy of Ophthalmology, we see that the answers to this question are revealed. The research was conducted on 22 patients with a history of rheumatic disease. In total, we see that an examination was performed on 42 eyes.
Within the scope of the research, LASIK is applied to 42 eyes. In the 1st, 3rd and 6th months, visual acuity was subjected to various tests and 22 patients were evaluated separately.
The results obtained are as follows;
- 14.3% of the patients required an additional procedure. It was observed that 9.5% of the patients developed moderate dry eye syndrome.
- Postoperative visual acuity was 20/25 or better in 100% of the patients.
- While the mean spherical equivalent (SE) was -5.39 ± 2.25 dioptre before LASIK, the SE value decreased to -0.15 ± 0.38 dioptre at 6 months after surgery.
- It was also observed that no serious complications occurred in any eye during this period.
Conclusion;
If only this study is evaluated, LASIK can give effective and safe results in patients with rheumatic disease. Of course, it is also important here what the disease is and at what level. In order to make a final decision and to decide whether there is a condition that will create an obstacle for LASIK, you need to be examined by a doctor who is a specialist in the field.
