International, very innovative, very experienced and scientific report by Prof. Auffarth.
“From 0.05 to 0.63 UDVA: Yesterday, I performed our first case of the #CornealAllogeneicIntrastromalRingSegment (#CAIRS) in a #keratoconus patient at the #UniversityEyeClinic of #Heidelberg.
A 45-year-old female patient presented to our keratoconus clinic complaining of progressive vision loss on her right eye. Her ophthalmologist had recommended undergoing corneal crosslinking for keratoconus, but she wished for a second opinion. Her uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) was 0.05 decimal and best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA) 0.4 with -2.25 -1.0 x 25˚. Given her contact lens intolerance, desire for options for visual improvement and the innate risks of penetrating keratoplasty, we recommended the CAIRS procedure. The surgery went smoothly with no intraoperative complications using the #AlconWaveLightFS200 #femtosecondlaser.
Today, at the first postoperative day, the UDVA has already improved to 0.63 decimal on the operated eye and the patient was very satisfied with the result.
Special thanks to Aylin Kılıç, MD and #LisaKleintjens (VisionGift) for making our first CAIRS case go smoothly and of course to Soosan Jacob for inventing this novel procedure that holds much promise for #keratoconus eyes!
