LipiFlow and Home Hot Compress: Which is more effective against dry eyes?

There are a wide variety of methods preferred in dry eye treatment. We can even say that there are many methods that can be applied at home and support dry eye treatment. Of course, each method applied may have different effects on treatment. In this content, we will examine a scientific study showing how different applications affect dry eye. In the comparison, LipiFlow, one of the technological approaches, and hot compress applications made at home are discussed. Let’s see which method shows how it works.

LipiFlow vs Home Hot Compress Comparison Against Dry Eye

In a scientific study on Chinese patients with meibomian gland dysfunction, a total of 100 eyes and 50 patients were evaluated.

The 3-month study compared LipiFlow treatment and lid massage with a hot compress similar to that applied at home.

According to the results of the study, dysfunctions in the meibomian glands improved in both groups. LipiFlow treatment resulted in permanent improvements in meibomian gland lipid secretion functions and thus in the quality of tears. While it was concluded that the treatment continued its healing effects for at least 3 months, it was found that the duration of effect was much less in hot compresses made at home. Because in the study, a single LipiFlow session lasting 12 minutes was evaluated in contrast to the hot compress application applied every day for 2 weeks. Despite this, it is observed that LipiFlow treatment is more effective and gives longer lasting results.

Conclusion

In conclusion, both treatments had a positive effect on restoring the function of the meibomian glands that cause dry eye, but the LipiFlow clinical approach showed more lasting and more effective results.
