Eye watering is a condition that causes a negative impact on your comfort in daily life and can cause a constant feeling of discomfort. Yes, it does not directly cause vision problems, but it can indirectly cause deterioration in the quality of vision. So, why does watery eyes, which we can frequently encounter in our routine life, occur? Which effects can it develop depending on?
Causes and Effects of Watery Eyes
Runny eyes, i.e. excessive watering of the eye, usually occur as a result of the eye’s defence mechanism. Of course, there are some influences that also activate this defence mechanism. Let us consider these effects separately.
Allergies
Allergens such as pollen, dust, animal hair, mould can cause irritation and watery eyes. Especially in the spring period, watery eyes due to allergies is a very common condition.
It may sound like an oxymoron, but dry eye can paradoxically cause the eye to produce more tears. When there is not enough moisture in the eye, the body tries to compensate by increasing tear production. However, if the quality of the tears produced is insufficient or the eye fat layer is deficient, the eye will again not be sufficiently moist.
Eye Infections
Conjunctivitis (inflammation of the eye) can cause irritation and discharge from the eye. These infections can be bacterial, viral or allergic. A doctor should be consulted and appropriate medication should be used.
Tear Duct Obstruction
When the tear ducts are blocked, tears begin to flow out of the eye. Although this condition is more common in children, it can also occur in adults. It is one of the common conditions especially in cold weather.
Eye Foreign Bodies
When there is a foreign substance in the eye (dust, eyelashes, small particles), the eye increases the production of tears to expel this substance. Short-term watering of the eye may occur.
Chemical irritation or fumes
Exposure to cigarette smoke, detergents or other chemicals can cause eye irritation and runny eyes.
Keratoconus or Other Corneal Problems
Especially in people with corneal problems such as keratoconus, runny eyes may occur more frequently. Irregularities on the corneal surface can affect tear distribution and make it difficult to moisturise the eye.
Environmental Factors
Wind, cold air or being in air-conditioned environments can increase tear production and cause watery eyes.
These are the most common causes of watery eyes. If watery eyes persist or are accompanied by other symptoms, you should consult an ophthalmologist.
