Why does a stye appear?

A stye in the eye is both visually and visually uncomfortable. In progressive cases, it can also cause localized pain and redness. Most of the time it is expected to go away on its own, but do you actually know why styes appear?

Let’s go into the details of the cause and see what can be done to prevent this problem and what supportive treatments are available.

What is a Stye?

First, it will be necessary to define stye. There are meibomian glands that secrete secretions to prevent premature evaporation of tears. If the meibomian glands are blocked in the eyelids, infection may occur in this area.

In this case, we see pimple-like redness and swelling in that very area. There may be increased swelling and pain in the area where the stye originates. In the same way, you can also see that a stiffness occurs here.

What are the symptoms of a stye?

As the stye develops, it shows some symptoms. In other words, we can say that some symptoms stand out before it reaches that swollen appearance we are used to. Let’s list these symptoms below.

  • Crusting of the eyelids
  • Tiny wheal and yellow inflammatory traces in the central part of the wheal
  • Regional swelling of the eyelid
  • Pain in certain parts of the eyelid
  • Increasing swelling in the area of formation

What Causes Stye?

We came to our main question. The main reason for the appearance of a stye is the blockage of the sebaceous glands and the occurrence of infection here. So why are our sebaceous glands blocked? We can mention a few common reasons for this.

  • Not paying enough attention to hygiene when using false eyelashes.
  • Not paying enough attention to hygiene when using make-up materials.
  • Not paying enough attention to hygiene when wearing contact lenses and sleeping without removing them, especially at night.
  • Not paying attention to eyelash base care.
  • Increasing the number of eyelash parasites at the base of the eyelashes and not taking any precautions against them.
  • Not paying attention to hand and face hygiene. Especially touching the eye with dirty hands is among the situations that increase the risk of bacterial infection.

How is the diagnosis made?

In fact, stye is one of the disorders that the person can perceive directly visually. However, especially in cases that persist for a long time, a doctor’s examination is important to make a definitive diagnosis.

The specialist doctor can check the obstruction in the sebaceous glands of the eyelid with special examinations and determine the exact diagnosis for stye.

How is a stye treated?

Most of the time, the stye begins to descend and resolves within a few weeks. In this process, some supportive treatment applications are also made.

Hot dressings and hot press applications to be applied to the eyelids for 5-10 minutes can be supportive.

Important approaches such as LipiFlow can also be preferred here to prevent blockage of the sebaceous glands and to clean the clogged glands. With Lipiflow, thermal vibration technology is used to open the blocked meibomian glands. We can say that it is especially effective in minimizing the risk of stye formation again.
